While we were staying near Pictured Rocks in Munising, Michigan we decided to spend a day in Marquette. With gas prices the way they are, we didn’t want to drive there more than once so we crammed an awful lot into one day.
We started at a really cool roadside attraction called Lakenenland Sculpture Park. It features a walk or drive through trail where you’ll see over 100 of Tom Lakenen’s metal art sculptures. He literally turns junk metal into works of art and displays it for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Next we made a quick stop at the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse before going on a hike at Presque Isle Park.
There is a beautiful 2.3 mile hiking loop around the perimeter of Presque Isle Park. You could also drive the loop and stop at various view points along the way.
Next we went to Sugarloaf Mountain. We did the 1.4 mile out and back hike up to some beautiful views.
Lastly we did the 1.7 mile out and back hike to Dead River Falls. This was a really fun hike with lots of climbing and scrambling over rocks and tree roots. There are several views of waterfalls along the way. The bad thing was the mosquitos were horrendous, so we had to keep moving quickly to avoid being swarmed by them.
It was exhausting fitting all of this into one day, but we’re trying not to drive too far too often these days. Marquette was very enjoyable though, so I’m glad we made the effort to spend a day there.
