In my last post about our stay in Mackinaw City, I mentioned that we visited Whitefish Point where we learned about Lake Superior’s Shipwreck Coast. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum has several interesting displays and a movie about various shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of Whitefish Point. Most notably is the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank in November 1975. You may be familiar with the song by Gordon Lightfoot “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.Continue reading
I’m not sure when I learned the correct pronunciation of Mackinac, but at one time I pronounced it like it looks. However, for those of you who may not know, it’s pronounced like Mackinaw which is the name of the city where we stayed while visiting the area.
We stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground in Mackinaw City which is now one of my new favorite campgrounds. It is just over the Mackinac Bridge on the lower peninsula of Michigan, on beautiful Lake Huron.Continue reading

After leaving Manistique we headed up to the Lake Superior side of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to visit the spectacular Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We started on the east side at Grand Marais and later moved to Munising. While staying at Woodland Park Campground in Grand Marais we enjoyed some amazing sunsets over Lake Superior.Continue reading
