Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is a very interesting and cultural town.  I loved the look of all the little adobe houses and buildings.

0423161313b

We parked at the visitor center that had plenty of space for a big truck.  Then we walked around and looked at some of the interesting sights.  First we saw the oldest church building in the USA.

0423161157

Then we visited the Loretto Chapel with the Miraculous Stairway.

0423161212b

The story behind this staircase is that the when the chapel was built in 1873, no access had been provided to the choir loft 20 feet above the chapel floor.  The Sisters used the chapel daily for Mass but were unable to use the choir loft.  Legend has it that the Sisters asked local carpenters to build a staircase, but none of them had the skill to build a circular staircase, and the chapel is too small for a standard staircase.  So the Sisters prayed for 9 days straight to St. Joseph.  On the 9th day a gray haired, bearded carpenter with a donkey came to the chapel and built the staircase. The reason they call it miraculous is because it was constructed without the use of nails or a center support.  The railing was added later in 1887.  The carpenter who built the staircase needed total privacy and locked himself in the chapel for 3 months.  When he was finished he was gone, so nobody knows his identity.  But the staircase is truly a work of art.

We took a break for lunch and had the best pizza at Upper Crust Pizza on the Old Santa Fe Trail. Yum!!

Next we visited the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

Then we walked down Canyon Road where there are several art galleries.

Santa Fe is beautiful and I’m glad we had the chance to visit it.  We usually steer clear of cities due to difficulty finding places to park a big truck and we are not exactly fans of large crowds.  Crowds and traffic come with big cities so we usually avoid them, but this was a fun city to visit and on a Saturday it wasn’t that crowded at all.

Amarillo Texas

Our last stop in Texas was in Amarillo, and we really enjoyed our time there.  There are several free things to do close to the RV park we stayed at.

Cadillac Ranch is free and you can’t go to Amarillo and not go see that iconic roadside attraction.  We bought a couple of cans of spray paint and went to leave our mark.

0412161721d

0412161728

The RV Museum is free and super cool!  Well, that is if you like RVs which of course we do.  But my biggest reason for wanting to go there was to see the Gornicke bus from the RV movie, which just so happens to be my favorite movie.  It was so neat to see this bus in person and get to go inside it.

Another free thing we did was visit the Don Harrington Discover Center.  It was free because it is included in our zoo/science center reciprocal membership.

They currently have the Grossology exhibit on display which was a big hit with the boys. 🙂

0413161227a

0413161236

We also visited Palo Duro Canyon which was awesome.  Not free, but only $5 per person over 12.  That needs its own blog post so please click the link if you are interested in reading about that visit.

We stayed at the Fort Amarillo RV Resort which was really nice.  We usually prefer state parks and national recreation areas better than RV parks because typically you have a lot more room at your site and more privacy, not to mention they’re cheaper.  RV parks usually pack RVs in so close to each other that you barely have room to breathe.  But there were no state parks in the Amarillo area other than Palo Duro Canyon and there was no cell phone coverage there so an RV park was the only option.

I’m glad we chose this park because it was very nice and had a reasonable weekly rate.  The people that work there are also super nice!  They have an indoor pool, a nice playground and a fun game room which happens to be underground and serves as a storm shelter.  I guess if you have to spend the night in a storm shelter the game room is not a bad place to be.  I thought we were going to need to go there the first night we were there.  It was so windy that night, the RV was rocking like crazy!  I kept getting lightning and tornado alerts on my phone, yet Chris was sleeping through the whole thing!  How he does that, I don’t know.  I finally woke him up to ask if he thinks we should head to the storm shelter.  He didn’t so we didn’t, and shortly after that the storm quieted down and we were all able to get some sleep.

Anyway, the RV park is really cute.  There was a really cute duck pond where Jesse liked feeding the ducks.

0410161647d

And at the front of the park is this set of cute, old fashioned shops.

0410161727a

0410161730b

Did I mention that Amarillo is windy?  This town reminded me of Kansas.  It was very flat and windy.  No wonder we saw so many wind turbines as we got close to this area.

0410161726_HDR

Fat Cat liked climbing on the fence next to our site.  There wasn’t much of a yard for her so I think she’s ready to get back to another state park where she has more room.  I can’t say I blame her.

0412161335c_HDR

We really enjoyed our time in Amarillo in spite of the wind.  Bye bye for now Texas, we have places to go and things to see!

Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon is considered the Grand Canyon of Texas.  We wanted to camp there but there is zero cellular coverage in the campground, so we ended up just spending a day hiking there.  And it sure was beautiful!

Back at the visitor center they earned Junior Naturalist badges (not the same thing as Junior Ranger badges that they earn at national parks).  Jake looks really worn out.  We did 4 hikes that day.  It has been awhile since we have gone hiking, but it’s good to be back at it.  It’s that time of year for lots more hiking for us!

North Texas Jellystone Park

We had reservations to stay at Bear Creek Campground in Ft. Worth, but at the last minute our reservation was cancelled due to flooding at that location so we ended up spending the week at North Texas Jellystone Park instead.  The kids were super excited about that!

0408161641

We have stayed at several Jellystone Parks and I have to say this is probably my least favorite one we have visited.  Jellystone Parks are not cheap so we don’t splurge on them very often, but when we do we expect it to be an awesome park, and this one just wasn’t.  I don’t think it was worth the cost.  The kids would disagree with me however because they loved it.  They are so easy to please, I should try to become more like them. 🙂

They especially loved the Air Zone which had several bouncy houses. This was only open on the weekend so the boys were counting down the days all week waiting for it to open.

0408161518b_Burst04

0408161512

0408161514b_Burst07

0408161523

We also rode the hay ride, fire truck ride and the boys loved this train ride.

0408161634

Most campsites at this park are super close together, but thankfully they put us on the other side of the park in between 2 cabins that were unoccupied for most of the week.  This site was really nice and at least had a bit of a yard unlike the sites on the other side of the park.

0404161919

Some places we stay have awesome views, but this one — not so much.  We had a nice view of the parking lot and the water park that wasn’t open.

0408161106a

We enjoyed a visit with another Fulltime Family.  We met the Thomas family in February at the rally in Tampa.  It was fun to meet up with them again in Texas.  We really enjoyed getting to know their family a little better, and we hope to meet up with them again later this summer.

Look how many kids they travel with!  And all 6 of them are super sweet and polite.  I have had people tell me they could never live in an RV fulltime like we do because they have 3 or 4 kids and it’s easier for us because we only have 2 kids.  Well here you go.  A living example of a large family making it work.  We’ve actually met many large families living on the road. I think we’re in the minority with our small family of 4.

0409161953

I’m currently blogging at 60 mph on our way across North Texas on to our next adventure.  Sometimes a place we go doesn’t quite live up to our my expectations, but I guess that’s all part of this unpredictable lifestyle.  So it’s onward and westward!

The Compassion Experience

We went to the Compassion Experience in Ft. Worth, TX.  Compassion International has these at various cities throughout the year, and if you haven’t been to one yet I would highly recommend attending one near you.  Click here to find one.

0408160955

Compassion is an organization that helps children in poverty.  We have been Compassion sponsors for years, but it was really awesome to attend this experience where we were able to see what life is really like for a child living in poverty.

0408161003

0408161031b

While you’re there you wear the provided headphones and listen to the child tell their story on the iPod.  As you enter each room you will hear the child explain what his/her life was like and what the room means.  You hear about how they felt when they heard they have a sponsor, and how that sponsor changed their lives.

0408161001

0408161004

You see what a Compassion center classroom looks like and real-life letters sent to the children from their sponsors.

0408161008

0408161030a

If you are already a Compassion sponsor, please remember to write to your child.  They love to hear from you and to know that you love them.

0408161008c

We became Compassion sponsors in 2007 when we sponsored a little girl named Niya from Indonesia.  She is now 17 and I have been so blessed to be her sponsor.  As a Compassion sponsor you can write letters to your child and they write back to you.  I have been writing to and receiving letters from Niya for 9 years and it has been wonderful to watch her grow over the years.  It is so easy to write to them — you can either send handwritten letters or type a letter on the Compassion website.  They have translators that translate your letter into the child’s language.

Once Jake was old enough to write letters he wanted to sponsor a child his age.  So we sponsored Ramses from Ecuador who is just 5 days older than Jake.  They have been writing letters to each other for a few years now and I think it’s awesome for Jake to learn how life can be so different for some children.

0408161035c

As soon as Jesse was old enough to write he also wanted to sponsor a child, so we sponsored Nehemias from El Salvador who is the same age as Jesse.

And not to be left out, Chris also decided to sponsor someone.  He chose a teenage boy because older children are often overlooked when people are looking to sponsor a child.  His child is now 18.  His name is Ermias and he lives in Ethiopia.

We have been so incredibly blessed by sponsoring these 4 amazing children.  I hope this will encourage you to become a Compassion sponsor.

I have started an Act for Compassion Campaign and my goal is to find sponsors for 3 children in the next 60 days.  If you feel so inclined, please click here to learn more and consider sponsoring a child today.

One thing I thought of today while we were walking through this experience: I wish I could sponsor them all!  I hate that any child has to live like that!  I know I can’t sponsor them all but I can make a difference in the life of one child.  I remember hearing a story once of a boy picking up starfish on the beach and throwing them back in the water. Someone asked him, “Why bother? There are so many of them, you can’t save them all.”  As the boy picked up one more starfish and threw it back in the water he said, “I just made a difference for that one.”

Please make a difference for a child today.

Cagle Recreation Area

We spent two weeks at Cagle Recreation Area in the Sam Houston National Forest north of Houston, TX.

This campsite ranks up there with my favorites.  We had lots of space to spread out, and the view of Lake Conroe right from the site was beautiful, especially the sunsets!

0324161930_HDR

Judy & Kylie visited us on the weekends while we were there and we always have so much fun with them.

0324161928a

0325161130_HDR

The kids set up what they called the “Museum of Bones” on the log by the lake.  They found lots of animal skeletons and set them all up on this log and wrote signs to indicate what kind of animal it was.  Anytime someone walked down the pathway they had to stop and check out the museum. The kids also set up a tip jar. 🙂  Their creativity amazes me!

0325161132a

There are many hiking trails there and the weather was beautiful so of course we went for a nice walk through the woods.

0325161135

The kids were collecting pine cones for our campfire.

0325161136a

We met some awesome friends last year while we were in Texas at Canyon Lake.  Neil & Beth and their kids Gabe & Marlie came to visit us here on Easter weekend and it was wonderful to see them again!  I just wish they had more time to stay and camp for the whole weekend.

Jesse had fun playing ball with Gabe,

and playing in the sand with Marlie.

Time for s’mores!

0325161922a

Chris is the master chef cooking up awesome meals in his outdoor kitchen whenever we have guests.

0325161814

Another great visit was from the Lundy family.  About 2 years ago when I first got the crazy idea in my head to sell everything we own and hit the road in an RV, I wanted to know if there were other families doing this.  So what do inquiring minds do?  Google it of course!  The very first blog I found of a family living and traveling in their RV was the Lundy 5.  I started following their blog at that time and I was so excited to hear that they were staying nearby and they came over for dinner one night.  We really enjoyed getting to know them and their amazing kids!

0326161949b

Most of our time here was spent doing fun things at the campground with the kids.  We set up an Easter egg hunt for them on Easter weekend.

0326161248b

0326161249b

And the next weekend Chris surprised the kids from the roof of the RV by throwing water balloons and buckets of water on them.  He is such a big kid himself!

RV Repairs in Louisiana

When you live in an RV having to have repairs done is never fun.  Especially because you have to figure out where you’re going to live while your home is in the shop, and you hope and pray it won’t take too long while you run up a hotel bill.

Last October I noticed this stress crack on the side of our RV.

1022151006a

Since we were going home for the holidays and planned to stay with family we decided to drop it off at our selling dealer Dick Gore’s RV World in Jacksonville and have it taken care of while we were not living in it during December.  Unfortunately even though we left it for 3 weeks, Dick Gore’s did not do anything to fix it.  Once we moved back into it in January we knew we now had to deal with the hassle of finding some place else to have it repaired while we are also living in it again.

We tried to have it repaired in Tampa, but that service center didn’t get around to it either.  After talking with some other RV’ing friends about similar experiences we were starting to think that all RV dealers have terrible customer service when it comes to repairs.

Finally we found Dixie RV in Hammond, LA.  If any of my RV’ing friends ever need something repaired, I would highly recommend Dixie RV.  They were awesome!  They have restored our faith in RV service centers. 🙂   From the moment we checked in, everything was handled smoothly and efficiently.  I heard from my service contact regularly throughout the week to inform me of the progress.  We also had some other items taken care of while we were there and they completed everything perfectly.

I also would like to say that our RV manufacturer, Heartland RV was amazing!  The rep that I worked with was so helpful with finding a place to get this taken care of.  By this time the RV was out of warranty, but he covered all the repairs anyway because we did try to get it fixed in December while it was still under warranty.  He even took care of some other things that should have been fixed in December.  I am thankful that Heartland stands behind their product and takes care of their customers.

UPDATE: the above comment about Heartland is no longer true. Yes they took care of us that one time, but since then we have had several more cracks in the sidewall of this RV until it is now no longer usable. Heartland does not stand behind their product once you are out of warranty (and even sometimes while you are still under warranty based on comments from several of the people that have reached out to me since I shared our Heartland story). See these posts for more details: The Day our Heartland RV Left us Homeless and Heartless Heartland RVs.

In the meantime we had a different kind of adventure staying at Drury Inn & Suites in Baton Rouge, LA.  We had to find a pet-friendly hotel of course for Fat Cat, and Drury allows pets.  Here is Fat Cat wandering the halls.  She was so confused by all the doors!  She had no idea which room was hers.

0316162059c

Besides being pet-friendly, they also happen to be the best hotel we could have chosen to stay at.  This place was awesome!  The rooms were spacious and comfortable.  They had a heated indoor/outdoor pool and a hot tub.  You could swim under the glass wall of the pool to go in or outside.

0314161942d

0317161639c

0317161639a

They serve free breakfast and dinner every day, and dinner includes free beer, wine & mixed drinks too.  And the dinner wasn’t just a bunch of junk food either.  They had really good food each night like soups, salads, pasta & chicken.  In fact, we happened to be there on my birthday and we were supposed to go out to dinner but I thought the dinner looked so good at the hotel we ended up eating there instead.  We did however go out to dinner the next night and had a wonderful dinner at the Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse.

The hotel staff was the friendliest staff we have ever encountered.  Every single employee that we came in contact with was so friendly to us.  They knew us by the end of the week and would ask us how the RV repairs were coming along.  They knew we were anxious to get back on the road.

I would highly recommend Drury Inn & Suites if you ever need a hotel and one of these is in the vicinity.

By Friday our home was finally ready for us to pick up, and I could not have been happier to get back in it.  Since it was late in the day Friday by the time it was ready Dixie let us camp for the night in one of their electric hookup sites.  They have several of these sites which I think is another perk of Dixie’s.  If you buy an RV there, you can camp there for the night to try it out and learn how everything works.  This can also be convenient if anything doesn’t work (which is normal when you buy an RV).  You’re already at the right place to have it fixed!

0318161729

Anyway, sometimes things need to be taken care of and even though it can be inconvenient, I am happy that things went so well for us that week.  Now we are happily back to our travels, enjoying Texas.

Back to Gulf Shores, Alabama

Last year when we left Florida we spent some time at Jellystone Park of the Alabama Gulf Coast.  Because we had so much fun at Jellystone last year we only spent one day visiting Gulf Shores so this year we decided to stay right in Gulf Shores at Gulf State Park.

My favorite thing about this park is the amazing, paved bike trails!

0306161521a

I rode for miles on these trails and even got to see some cool wildlife like this alligator and her babies.  (The 2 babies are a little hard to see; they are hanging out in the water behind the mama.  I later learned that these are not exactly babies anymore, they’re about 3 years old.)

0306161541b

0306161542

One day the kids went for a ride with me because I told them I found a cool rock-climbing park along the trail.

0308161448

0308161450e

The Gulf State Park Pier was across the street from the campground.  This was fun to visit in the evening for the sunsets, and the boys liked wrestling in the sand.

0307161739

0307161746a

0307161743

There were cool birds hanging out on the pier.

0307161756b

I like this sign.

0312161219a

Fat Cat enjoyed hunting rabbits at our campsite.  The rabbits didn’t pay any attention to her.  She would sneak up on them, and then when she finally decided to chase them, they ran away and she was stuck because of the leash.  It’s a little hard to see but she is hunting a rabbit (to the left) in this picture.

0308161611c

The highlight of this trip was having the Norstrem family come to stay with us for a few days.  Ken, Kelli and their kids are good friends of ours from back home in Fernandina.  We miss them a lot when we’re traveling and are thankful that they came out to join us for a few days before we got too far away from Florida.  The funny thing is that every time we see them it seems to be rainy and cold.  This was no different.  We had nice weather all week, but as soon as they were on their way to see us the rain started.  And it rained pretty much the entire time they were with us.  You might wonder how can 9 humans and 1 cat live in an RV for 3 rainy days?  With the Norstrems it was no problem.  We have so much fun with them no matter what the circumstances!

One day the kids all decided to go outside in their bathing suits and play in the rain.  But the rain decided to take a break at that time, so instead they had a water balloon fight.

0311161053d

0311161122a_Burst01

0311161122b

The campground had a really nice nature center so we went there one day to play with snakes.  Umm, I guess I should say the kids played with snakes, I have no interest in holding a snake.

0311161623a

0311161627

The snake was trying to get in Jesse’s pants!

0311161626d

This snake was on the floor eating a dead mouse.  Yuck!

0309161331d

This turtle roams around the nature center.  You have to be careful where you step!

0311161640b

We wanted to take the Norstrems to the pier, but the weather never cooperated so we just had to go in the rain.

0312161152a

0312161152

We took a field trip back to Florida to the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum.  This was really cool!

0312161459

And finally, we celebrated Chris’s birthday.  Poor Chris had to cook dinner on his birthday.  We had planned to have dinner at Lambert’s (Home of the Throwed Rolls), but the wait was 90 minutes.  So Chris suggested we all go back to the house (RV) and have dinner there.  For those of you that know Chris, he is a great cook!  He cooks for everyone that comes to visit, even on his birthday.

0312161954a

We had so much fun at Gulf State Park and especially with our friends visiting.  We miss them and look forward to seeing them again when we get back to Florida.  We keep trying to talk them into joining us on the road!

Gulf Islands National Seashore

Our last stop in Florida was in Pensacola Beach.  We stayed at Ft. Pickens Campground on Gulf Islands National Seashore.0305161203e

This place is perfect if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet and uncrowded beach.  Our campsite was just steps from the beach.  It was the most beautiful white sand beach, and we almost had the whole beach to ourselves.  It was rare to even see another person out there.  We spent most evenings on the beach watching the spectacular sunsets.

0228161730d

0228161735b

Sometimes during the day I took the boys to the beach to play in the sand or I just went by myself to enjoy a good book.  This was the perfect place to relax!

One day we saw lots of dolphins swimming in the waves and we saw this large group of ducks or birds floating down the current all clustered together.  It was a strange sight!

0302161353b

Even Fat Cat loved this place.  She wanted to be outside all the time; she even made friends with an armadillo!  I really wish I had a picture of that!

0301160903a

Gulf Islands National Seashore is part of the National Park system which means they have a Junior Ranger program.  There was a bike path from the campground to Ft. Pickens so the boys and I went over there one day to tour the fort and do some activities towards earning their Junior Ranger badges.

St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park is in Panama City, FL on the beautiful gulf coast.  Like most Florida state parks, it takes some diligence to get a reservation, and even more so if you want one of their highly coveted lagoon front sites.  I didn’t make this reservation at the 11 month window because other than going home to Fernandina Beach, I don’t usually know that far in advance where we’ll be. So for this reservation I had to watch for cancellations and was happy to eventually find a waterfront lagoon site had become available for the dates I wanted.

Here is a picture of our site on the lagoon.  Too bad it only lasted about 20 minutes!

You know, living in an RV can sometimes come with some challenges.  The day we got to St. Andrews was one of those days.

The first thing that happened was we couldn’t find our site.  It is not clearly marked from the road.  Once we found our site I realized it was at a very weird angle and I wasn’t sure how Chris was going to back our house into it.  He starts getting the rig into position to give it a try when this joker in a little convertible comes whipping up beside us and pulls into our campsite like he’s just going to spend the day there.  Um, no, I don’t think so!  Chris told him he’s getting ready to back into that site so he pulls out, but instead of driving away he pulls up right next to Chris so that Chris can’t even start backing into the site until this guy gets out of the way.  Meanwhile I’m behind the rig on the phone with Chris because my job is to direct him in and we’re both just wondering what this joker is doing sitting there in the way.  The guy acts all mad at us like we’re inconveniencing him or something, but he finally drove off.

Next Chris could finally start trying to back into the site and I have to say that he did an amazing job.  He has really gotten quite good at this!  Our RV has an automatic leveling system so once he got in the site and unhitched he started the leveling process.  When it was done the tires on one side of the rig were up off the ground.  The site was that un-level!  We realized that’s not going to work so we had to re-hitch to the truck and move a little, get some buckets of dirt and make piles under the levelers so we could try again.  Don’t ask me why we don’t have leveling blocks… that’s something Chris says he’s going to get one of these days. 😉

Anyway, attempt #2 worked and we were finally unhitched and leveled and ready to set up.  That is until I realized the refrigerator wasn’t working.  Then I realized half of the RV doesn’t have power.  A few minutes later the whole RV lost power.  By the way, if you’re an RV’er and you don’t have one of these Electrical Management Systems (EMS), get one.  I think this saved our appliances and electrical system from serious damage that day.

We called the park office and they sent a park ranger to check out the electrical pedestal.  He wasn’t able to fix it and since it was Sunday they would have to wait until the next day to get an electrician to come out and fix it which means we had to move.  What?  Are you kidding me??  After all the trouble it was to get into this beautiful site, now we have to move?  Oh, and there are no available water front sites either.

Here is a picture of the new site.  Nothing really wrong with it. Nice and woodsy and lots of room.  It was also across from the playground which the kids loved.  It just wasn’t the waterfront site that I had worked so hard to reserve.

Anyway, we thought they were getting an electrician out on Monday to fix it, but on Monday the park employees acted like there was nothing wrong with the electric at that site and we should just move back to it if we wanted to.  Chris took our EMS back to that site to check the voltage readings and it was not good at all so he told the employees we can’t move back until they fix it.  By Tuesday it seemed nobody was really taking this seriously and they were just blowing us off, so Chris asked to speak to the park manager who came by our site Tuesday afternoon.

I have to say the park manager was awesome!  He listened to our concerns and took full responsibility for the whole situation and said he would get an electrician out to look at it as soon as possible.  The electrician came out Wednesday and confirmed that yes, there was indeed an issue with that electrical pedestal and the issue could eventually affect the other sites nearby.  The manager was very good to us and refunded us for half of our stay, and offered to give us 3 free nights if we would come back sometime.  We will certainly take him up on that. 🙂

In spite of all that drama, we did enjoy our stay.  St. Andrews is a beautiful park with one side on Grand Lagoon and the other side on the Gulf of Mexico.  The boys and I hiked the trail around Gator Lake.  We didn’t see any gators though until the very end when a lady pointed one out to us.  It was a small gator and covered in green stuff so he was hard to see.

There were some cool trees to climb on this trail.

We also saw several deer at the campground.

And my favorite: the sunsets.  You know I love sunsets!

One more thing went wrong while we were there.  As soon as we were hitched up and ready to leave on our checkout day, I noticed a bubble on one of our tires.  So Chris had to change a tire before we left.  He’s getting pretty good at that too, it was the second one in 2 weeks!

I honestly wouldn’t trade this traveling life for anything, but sometimes things don’t always work out the way we want.  I always remind myself that whatever happens I can trust God to make sure we are where we need to be.  I pray over all the plans that I make and every trip we take.  I pray that if the plans I made are not His best for us that He will change them.  So when things don’t go exactly according to my plan, I try not to get too disappointed and trust that things happen the way they are supposed to.  It’s not always easy though, because you know I am human. 😉
