Ouray Hot Springs and Falls

Ouray (pronounced you-ray) is a super cute little town in southwest Colorado.  It is nicknamed the Switzerland of America and I can see why.

0609161837

Ouray Hot Springs was so much fun!  The water is hot year round and we saw pictures of people there in the winter with snow all around while they were in the springs.  How cool is that!  There was still snow on the mountains when we were there, but it wasn’t cold outside anymore.

0604161247a

The boys loved playing on the obstacle course, but before they could do that they were required to pass a swimming test. We assumed this would be easy because they have been swimming since they were babies in our backyard pool.  It turns out it wasn’t quite so easy because they were required to swim with the correct breast stroke and back stroke techniques.  Since the only swimming lessons they ever had were Infant Survival Swimming lessons when they were babies, they have never learned these proper swimming strokes.  They are both really good swimmers but they just didn’t understand what was required.  The lifeguards were nice though and explained what was expected.

0604161137

Jake passed the first time, but unfortunately Jesse didn’t.  He was pretty disappointed, so we went to the shallow pool and practiced.  I showed him what they were expecting and he picked it up quickly.  He re-took the test and passed!  Now they both could do the obstacle course.

Here are Chris and Jake running the race.

This is the other side of the obstacle course before they slide down into the water.

Jesse and Chris raced too.

And not to be left out, I wanted to get in on the fun too!

Jesse is winning of course!

Besides the obstacle course, there was a water slide that was really fun.

The hot springs was of course the highlight of our time in Ouray, but we also loved visiting this cute little town.  I bet this looks like a winter wonderland in the winter time.  Maybe that’s why they call it the Switzerland of America?

There is a very scenic drive called the Million Dollar highway just at the end of the town.

0609161836

We only rode on it for a few miles because it was a scary drive.  I don’t have pictures, but when you get higher up, there are no guard rails and the road is narrow and curvy with a very long drop-off on the side of the road.  Chris was white-knuckling that for a little bit until we could find a place to turn around.  The views were amazing though!

0609161842_HDR

We hiked to the Cascade Falls and on the way up we saw this cute little house that reminded me of something you might see in a fairy tale.

We had so much fun in Ouray.  It’s definitely on our growing list of places we would like to return to someday.

Memorial Day in the Snow

Considering that we lived in Florida for 15 years before traveling, playing in the snow on Memorial Day was quite a novelty for us.  We spent the day at Grand Mesa National Forest which was absolutely beautiful.  We didn’t exactly dress appropriately for snow; we thought we would be hiking in the forest.  However, most of the hiking trails were covered in snow, and even several of the roads were still closed and covered in snow.  So we just enjoyed a most unusual (for us) Memorial Day playing in the snow.

0530161332

On the way up to Grand Mesa we saw this interesting sight of cows in the road.  They didn’t seem to care that they were holding up traffic. 🙂

0530161139e

We had planned to go to a picnic area for lunch, but this is as far as we went in our truck up the road and then decided to turn around and find someplace else to eat.  That’s Jesse running up the hill.

0530161257_HDR

We ended up at the parking lot at this lake and had a tailgate picnic.  It was quite chilly for us Floridians in shorts!

0530161233a

Then we walked down a short trail that brought us to a campground that was mostly under snow.  The boys loved throwing snowballs until their hands got too cold!

0530161239b_HDR

After that we hiked around some lakes as far as we could go.  The combination of snow and lakes was so beautiful!

After walking around the lakes for awhile we continued on the scenic byway through Grand Mesa and saw even more snow and some icy lakes.

0530161347

0530161353

When we got to the Visitor Center it looked like they had just plowed the parking lot.  The Visitor Center actually just opened that day for the season.

0530161413c

If we are ever back in this area in the summertime we’ll have to make a return visit to try some of the trails.  But we were certainly not disappointed to find all this snow.  It was a really fun day and the boys loved playing in it and throwing snowballs.  And considering it was quite hot down in Fruita where we were staying, this was a refreshing change.

Colorado National Monument

Colorado National Monument is in Fruita and Grand Junction, CO.  We hiked there for a few days while we were in the area.  It was similar to Utah with all the red rocks, but different because of all the mountains in the background.  It’s like the transition from the red rocks of Utah to the mountains of Colorado and that makes for lots of gorgeous scenery!

0529161017c

On the way up into the hills we saw lots of big horn sheep.

0529161022f

0529161023d

And we drove through a couple of cool tunnels.  I don’t know if we could have driven our house through there!

0525161635a

There are several beautiful viewpoints and hikes to do in this park.  We went there in the evenings a few times after work because we were staying at a campground just 3 miles from the entrance.  We also spent a whole weekend day there.

0525161712

0525161707

0529161039c

There is an entrance to this park in Fruita and also in Grand Junction and you can drive the whole scenic Rimrock Drive through from one side to the other.  Since the Fruita side was near our campground we drove all the way to the Grand Junction side only on the weekend when we had more time.  We did 2 hikes on the Grand Junction side: the Devil’s Kitchen and the Serpent’s Trail.  Who comes up with these names?  I can tell you that the Devil’s Kitchen was a very cool and refreshing rock room at the end of the hike where you could rest and cool off.  Not at all how I would imagine the devil’s kitchen to really feel like!

Serpent’s Trail was a long hike uphill and then back down with amazing views all around.  And since it’s called Serpent’s Trail I expected to see lots of snakes but we only saw one.

Later in the week we went back again in the evening so the kid’s could get their Junior Ranger badges.

0531161626a

And we also did the Coke Ovens hike that night because it was too crowded on the weekend.

0531161726

On the way to the Coke Ovens we found this cave that was a little bit off the trail.  My 3 guys thought it would be fun to go in it, but I thought it was just creepy.  We walked in and were surprised at how far back it goes.  I opened up my flashlight app on my phone so we could see where we were going.  We did see light at the end of the tunnel but it got too narrow to crawl through (at least for adults).  All I could think of was what if there is a bear in here, or snakes or who knows what else?  Ah, the adventures of living with boys! 🙂

The rest of the pictures are of some of the scenic viewpoints you can find along Rimrock Drive.

They have a Balanced Rock just like Arches National Park!

0531161826_HDR

While we were in Fruita we stayed at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park.  Now that’s a mouthful of a name for a state park!  We had a really nice site with plenty of space (unlike those crowded RV parks in Moab). 🙂

Fat Cat loved this campground!  She would hide in the bushes and try to hunt birds.  One evening Chris & I were sitting outside enjoying the sunset and the cat was crouched down like she was ready to attack something.  Suddenly a black bird came low enough for her and she leaped into the air and actually touched the bird!  The bird flew safely away, but oh how I wish I could have captured that on video!  The picture below is Fat Cat resting on the picnic table until…

0523161858

… just minutes later she hears a bird on the roof of the patio cover!

0523161900

We enjoyed beautiful sunsets every evening.

0526162009_HDR

0526162042_HDR

We loved this state park, but the weather suddenly turned really hot… I mean like 95+ degrees hot.  I didn’t think Colorado got that hot!  Anyway, the nice thing about having a house on wheels is that when the weather gets unpleasant we can move on.  And move on we did to higher elevations.

Corona Arch and a Rattlesnake Encounter

Moab Utah has so many fun things to do that it is definitely one of those places we plan to return to one day.  Besides visiting Arches and Canyonlands, and river rafting on the Colorado River, we also heard about a really awesome hike to Corona Arch.  When I mentioned to Chris that I wanted to hike to this arch he said only if they would be serving Coronas once we got there. 😉 This hike is about 10 miles from Arches National Park.  We met up with another Fulltime Family that joined us on this hike which made it even more fun!

Meet the Muller family.  4/5 of them anyway.  Fin must have been running off ahead with our boys at this time.  We loved hanging out with this family for the evening and hope to meet up with them again someday down the road.

0520161806

There’s Fin!

0520161818

0520161824a

I thought this train track looked really cool coming through the rock.  I wish we would have seen a train come through while we were there.

0520161919

While we were in Moab we stayed at the OK RV Park.  The sites at our campground were so close together!  This is why we prefer to stay at state parks whenever possible.  But while visiting Moab the choices are pretty much limited to RV parks with really tight sites like these (or boondocking).

0515161716

The views were pretty though.

0515161717a

Speaking of boondocking, after the hike to Corona Arch the Muller family invited us to their campsite for dinner.  They were boondocking at a really awesome spot.  Boondocking (also known as dry camping) means they were camping at a spot with no water or electric hookups.  We haven’t done that yet mainly because we don’t have a generator.  I’m hoping we can get a generator sometime soon because from what I’ve seen you can stay in some really out of the way spots with amazing views.  The picture below was taken from their campsite.

0520162035

Wide open spaces in the wilderness like this would be nice, but I should mention there is a much higher chance of encountering wildlife like the rattlesnake the boys came across that night.  The snake was right near Jake’s foot but thankfully only rattled to warn them to get away which they did.  They came running and screaming back to the campsite.  I thank God for watching over and protecting the boys that night!

I’m sorry I don’t have a picture of it.  Chris went to look at it and since it was getting dark he needed a flashlight to see it.  He called me over to check it out, which I did.  It blended in really well with the sand.  I’m surprised Jake didn’t step on it.  Again, I thank God for protecting them!

Anyway, that about wraps up my posts from Utah.  Two weeks, three national parks and lots of fun!  Now on to some more adventures in Colorado.  Cheers!

Navajo State Park

Navajo State Park is located in southwest Colorado, just across from New Mexico on Navajo Lake.  This was the perfect place to rest up after a busy couple of weeks in New Mexico and to prepare for another couple of busy weeks visiting national parks in Utah.

This state park is about 45 minutes from Durango and Pagosa Springs, and you know what?  We didn’t go to either one.  That’s what happens when you’re a full-time RV’er.  Sometimes you realize you just need some downtime and you can’t see and do it all. We’re not on vacation, this is our life.  And sometimes in life you need time to get caught up on work, school, household chores, and time to just chill out.  That’s what we did at Navajo State Park.  Not a bad place to just unwind and rest for a week.

The day we arrived in Colorado it was very cold.  It was snowing during parts of our drive that day, but by the time we got to our campground it was only raining.  It was the first time in all of our travels that we had to set up our home in the rain.  And it was freezing!  By the next day the sun came out and the rest of the week was just beautiful.

Jake and I went hiking on the nature trails that we could access just behind our campsite.

Chris took both boys to play golf.  Now they can’t wait to see Grampa again and play golf with him.

North Texas Jellystone Park

We had reservations to stay at Bear Creek Campground in Ft. Worth, but at the last minute our reservation was cancelled due to flooding at that location so we ended up spending the week at North Texas Jellystone Park instead.  The kids were super excited about that!

0408161641

We have stayed at several Jellystone Parks and I have to say this is probably my least favorite one we have visited.  Jellystone Parks are not cheap so we don’t splurge on them very often, but when we do we expect it to be an awesome park, and this one just wasn’t.  I don’t think it was worth the cost.  The kids would disagree with me however because they loved it.  They are so easy to please, I should try to become more like them. 🙂

They especially loved the Air Zone which had several bouncy houses. This was only open on the weekend so the boys were counting down the days all week waiting for it to open.

0408161512

0408161514b_Burst07

0408161523

We also rode the hay ride, fire truck ride and the boys loved this train ride.

0408161634

Most campsites at this park are super close together, but thankfully they put us on the other side of the park in between 2 cabins that were unoccupied for most of the week.  This site was really nice and at least had a bit of a yard unlike the sites on the other side of the park.

0404161919

Some places we stay have awesome views, but this one — not so much.  We had a nice view of the parking lot and the water park that wasn’t open.

0408161106a

We enjoyed a visit with another Fulltime Family.  We met the Thomas family in February at the rally in Tampa.  It was fun to meet up with them again in Texas.  We really enjoyed getting to know their family a little better, and we hope to meet up with them again later this summer.

Look how many kids they travel with!  And all 6 of them are super sweet and polite.  I have had people tell me they could never live in an RV fulltime like we do because they have 3 or 4 kids and it’s easier for us because we only have 2 kids.  Well here you go.  A living example of a large family making it work.  We’ve actually met many large families living on the road. I think we’re in the minority with our small family of 4.

0409161953

I’m currently blogging at 60 mph on our way across North Texas on to our next adventure.  Sometimes a place we go doesn’t quite live up to our my expectations, but I guess that’s all part of this unpredictable lifestyle.  So it’s onward and westward!

We’re Still in Florida

Since my last post we have been very busy hanging out in Florida.  There’s no sense leaving the state until it warms up in other states, right?

We spent a couple of weeks at Disney’s Ft. Wilderness, and my parents came to visit for part of our stay.  Those of you that know us well, know that we are Disney fanatics and when we lived in FL that is where most of our vacations were spent.  So anytime we’re back in FL you can be sure part of that time will be spent at our favorite place.

My mom sure does look young, doesn’t she?  And she rides all the roller coasters too!  I’m so thankful to have such cool parents. 🙂

Next we attended our 3rd Fulltime Families (FtF) rally at Lazydays in Tampa.  If you remember that is where our adventures started last year.  It was like a “nomadiversary” celebration being back at Lazydays.

At the rally last year, the boys started a new scouting program called FtF Explorers.  At this year’s rally they finished up the required activities to advance to the next level.  Here is a picture of the ceremony for the kids that graduated from Stargazer to Pioneer.

0213161900

One of the Explorer badges they earned was the Fire Safety badge by planning and executing a fire drill in our house.  Here is a picture of them learning how to use one of the fire escape windows.

0210161151e

The rally was super fun and super busy with several activities like a Valentine’s dance, an adult Hungry, Hungry Hippo game and a field trip to Legoland.

This is Chris playing Hungry, Hungry Hippos.  This was hilarious!  I played it too with Chris pushing me around on the floor, but I don’t have any pictures of that unfortunately.  I must figure out how to get in more pictures!

0213161642a

We enjoyed a beautiful day at Legoland with more than 300 other fulltime RV’ing families.

0212161133

0212161504x

I must admit that after several weeks of visits with family and friends in addition to Disney trips and a rally, we were quite exhausted.  Chris & I are introverts.  And that doesn’t mean we don’t like to be around people, we most definitely enjoy all of this social activity!  But what it does mean is that we need some mix of downtime in between to recharge.  Well, we didn’t have much of that since probably sometime in December so you can imagine that after leaving the rally we were pretty worn out.  It was time for a few days at a peaceful and quiet campground.  Eastbank Campground on Lake Seminole on the FL/GA border was just perfect for a chance to relax and recharge.

0216161131a

0217161711d

Our campsite was huge and had a fantastic view of the lake and we enjoyed gorgeous sunsets and campfires every evening.  We even enjoyed a lovely visit from my sister and brother-in-law.  It was very nice to relax and unwind with them as they also have been very busy and needed some downtime.  I loved watching my brother-in-law Chris enjoy the scenery with his ever-present camera.

Rally Time in the Ozarks

We just spent a couple of weeks in Branson, Missouri.  Branson is one of the friendliest towns we have ever been to.  People are just so nice and polite there!  We went to Branson to attend the Fulltime Families NOT Back to School Roadshool Rally.  Don’t let the name fool you.  Our kids may not be sitting behind a desk in school all day, but there was plenty of learning (or roadschooling) going on.

12002886_10207743469083403_4918455681159959111_n

It was awesome to re-connect with friends we met at the last rally and to meet some new friends.  The rally was super fun with many fun family activities like campground games, s’mores night, 80’s night, and a movie under the stars featuring what else but the movie RV (my favorite!).

0910151441a

11144410_10153674006787425_5715626089679054061_o

We also went on several field trips.  First we hiked to a waterfall.

0908151018a

My Florida boys thought the water was too cold, but the other kids didn’t seem to mind it.  They must not be from Florida!

0908151029a

We went to the Titanic Museum.  This museum has many artifacts from the Titanic and you can learn all about the ship and its passengers.  It was so interesting, but unfortunately we were not allowed to take any pictures inside the museum.  At the beginning of the field trip we were each given a boarding pass with the name of a real passenger on the Titanic.  The boarding pass had some information about the passenger and let you know what class they were in.  At the end of the museum you found out if your passenger survived.  Jake and Jesse each received a pass with the name of a little boy who was in third class.  Their passengers both survived.  Chris’s passenger was a crew member who also survived.  My passenger did not survive, but she was a hero.  She was in first class and had gotten on a lifeboat, but then she gave up her seat to a mother and child.

Titanic

We also went to see the Jonah show at the Sights and Sounds Theater which was a really awesome show, but again we were not able to take pictures during the show.

0912151459

0912151500a

Another show we attended was the Shoji Tabuchi show.  The Fulltime Families group was honored to be invited to this show for free.  Shoji Tabuchi is an extremely talented violinist from Japan.  The show is very entertaining and has a wide variety of music from swing and polka to country and pop.  The show consisted of a very talented group of musicians, singers and dancers.

0916151935

This theater is known as having “America’s Best Restrooms”.  I heard the men’s room even has a billiard table!

11225300_497465123753543_8848372664096343396_n

We went on several fields trips with our good friends, the Graham family.  We toured the College of the Ozarks.  I was so impressed with this college.  The students all work on campus to earn free tuition.  When they graduate they leave with no student loan debt.  They are also taught to work very hard which is why the college is also known as Hard Work U.  Beautiful views of the Ozarks from the college.

0916151139c

The college is a Christian college and displays the Ten Commandments.  One thing I found interesting was that several students rode their bikes to class and just left their bikes outside the buildings without locking them.  Hmm, it’s funny how that works when people are taught “thou shalt not steal”.  Too bad they no longer teach that in public school.

0916151054a

Words to live by…

Cute little old fashioned school house at the college.

0916151150

The mill was very cool.  We met some of the students that were working on weaving and basket making.  It was so interesting to watch how she made a table runner on this weaving loom.

0916151214

0916151247c

0916151247

Another day we went to the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery where we learned how they breed trout to later be released into Lake Taneycomo.  We watched an interesting short film in the visitor center that explained the whole process.  The visitor center also had lots of reptiles for us to check out.

0917151142

Touching an albino king snake.  I was surprised how soft this snake felt.  Not slimy like they look, but very soft.

0917151108b

Feeding the fish so they can grow up to be released into the lake for the fishermen.  I guess this is what they call “farm raised fish”?

0917151115b

0917151121

Watching some fly fishermen in the lake.

0917151232b

Then we went to the Table Rock Lake dam.  The visitor center there was also very interesting where we learned all about how they built the dam, and that they had to build it due to flooding problems.  The visitor center also had a lot of educational and fun things for the kids to play with.

0917151355

The beautiful Graham family.  I love these people!

0917151346c

Another day we went on a hike to some caves at Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area.

0919151203a

We walked into this cave and thankfully didn’t run into any wild animals, but there were a lot of spiders.  It was creepy!!

0919151231

0919151233

We celebrated Jesse’s 9th birthday at Lambert’s (Home of the Throwed Rolls).  We had never been to a Lambert’s before but I have heard of them.  I imagined we would be getting hit in the head with rolls the whole night, but it wasn’t really like that.  They came around regularly with rolls and if you want one you hold up your hands to catch it and they throw them to you.  They also regularly bring “pass-arounds” to your table which are several different side items and you can have as much as you want.  Between the rolls and pass-arounds we hardly had room for our dinner.  The place really knows how to feed people and you will not leave hungry!  The food was delicious and it was a really fun night.  We were very thankful to have the Grahams join us for Jesse’s birthday celebration.  After dinner we all went back to their RV for a fun game night.

0914151816a

0914151816c

Fat Cat enjoyed her time at the rally too!  Here she is guarding the door.  She’s such a good watch-cat.

0910151759a

And she liked lounging in a beach chair.

0911151658

Some other things we did included a visit to Stone Hill Winery and a date night at Branson Landing with our friends.  The nighttime light show at the landing is really cool!  This has been a really busy 2 weeks!  Next we’re going to rest up for a week in Tennessee before we meet up with our friends again.
